Production of Lipid-based Functional Ingredients from Rice Bran Oil By-products

Technology Overview

Triterpene alcohols and phytosterols, both classified assteroid alcohols, have applications in a wide range of products, including dietary supplements, functional foods, and cosmetics. Both compounds offer numerous health benefits, such as lowering LDL cholesterol, reducing fat absorption, anti-inflammatory properties, and antioxidant effects.

Gamma-oryzanol, abundantly present in rice bran oil, is a mixture of ferulic acid esters of triterpene alcohols and phytosterols and therefore represents a vital source for the extraction of triterpene alcohols and phytosterols. The manufacturing process typically involves the hydrolysis of gamma-oryzanol and purification of triterpene alcohols and phytosterols. Traditional purification methods have various drawbacks, including complexity, time consumption, the use of toxic organic solvents, and temperature variability.

Key Features & Benefits

This process represents a simple production for triterpene alcohols and phytosterols from gamma-oryzanol. The first step is an alkaline hydrolysis of crude gamma-oryzanol ina heated alcohol solution, followed by precipitation using a water-miscible antisolvent. The process has been streamlined to reduce the complexity of purifying triterpene alcohols and phytosterols, achieving a purity level of 95-99% and a theoretical yield of 90%. These purifiedcompounds can be incorporated into various products. In addition, the process yields ferulic acid as a valuable by-product, which possesses antioxidant properties and can be utilized in a multitude of applications.
